Some Thoughts on the Resume Writing Process
Wikipedia: Advertising is a form of communication used to help sell products and services. Typically it communicates a message including the name of the product or service and how that product or service could potentially benefit the consumer.
Your resume is an advertisement that helps you to sell your services to an employer.
The tools at the disposal of the modern advertiser are ubiquitous and easily adapted to the format of a resume. But in order to effectively accomplish this writing task we must first get ourselves prepared for the job. We must:
- Know what we are selling
- Know who we are selling it to
There is no way to "know what we are selling" without getting to know you. Additionally, we will not know who we are selling to without taking a serious look at your unique tastes and preferences.
Once we have a clear understanding of the features that we are selling, and the audience that we are selling them to, the job of the advertiser (in this case your trusty resume writer) is to draw attention to the benefits offered by these unique features. In the case of a resume, these benefits are found by looking at one's work history and looking for evidence that they have been a benefit in the past.
Once all of this information is gathered together we will have laid the ground work for a credible, authentic and memorable resume.
